Hospital Walkie Talkie Hide N Seek

I came across this caringbridge page today and I had to share. It's a great example of how the little things can brighten your day in the hospital.

Dylan is well known to Heroes for Children. He and his family came to the Valentine's Dinner and had a blast. We are excited to share this spunky little guy's favorite hospital past-time with you!

Hospital Walkie Talkie Hide N Seek

Note- Game is best played when players are not attached to IV poles. IV poles are easy to spot, make sudden moves difficult and impede the progress of the Game.

Object of the Game: To provide entertainment on Sundays when the Playroom is closed.

Number of Players: 2-4 players

Equipment: Walkie Talkies

Space Required: An entire hospital floor

Skill Level: Advanced levels of boredom

Skills Required: Running, Hiding, Seeking, Heckling and Ability to improvise law enforcement and repeatable truck driver lingo

Playing Time: Can be played until nurses have had enough.

How to Play the Game:

The Game starts with all players staring into the closed dark Playroom. Each player, or team of players, is given a walkie talkie. Players then walk in opposite directions zigging and zagging down hallways until they can no longer see each other. The goal is to move as far away as possible from your opponent.

After 30 seconds Player One attempts to contact Player Two via the walkie talkie. Contact by Player One is an attempt to engage Player Two in conversation to determine which section of the floor Player Two is located on. Conversation at this point is generally a mixture of law enforcement and truck driver lingo……….” Breaker breaker 1-9 we need a 10-20 on a Code 7. We have a bogey on a bear 10-4, copy, over.”

Conversation is continued as the Players stalk through the hallways becoming as stealth as possible hiding in doorways, behind hospital beds and equipment. Concealing yourself in a large group of visitors is the best way to move down long hallways undetected. Hiding in another patients room is allowed but it is highly recommended you know that patient prior to entering.

Once an opponent is spotted you are allowed to heckle them as long as you stay undetected. The Game ends when both players spot each other. However, if you are able to outrun your opponent and quickly disappear down another hallway you are allowed to do so one time to extend the Game.

Rules can be modified and changed at any time at the discretion of all Players.

Family Fun Activities

As you all know we focus on the entire family when it comes to mission delivery. Not just the child with cancer, not just the parents, we don’t exclude the siblings. We want to be sure the entire family is taken care of.

We have a potential grant opportunity to provide monthly activities for families with children battling cancer. The activities would be for the whole family to create happy memories and strengthen family bonds! We need your help to come up with the best possible family activity ideas!!

What do you like to do as whole family? Think back over the past few years to what you have done as a family and what special memories you have with your family. Please share any all ideas in the comments section. We look forward to hearing your ideas!

Teen provides hope (and a laptop!)

Laptops for Love provides teens with a laptop. Battling cancer is tough for kids of all ages. I often think teenagers have it the hardest because of the social/emotional aspect of dealing with life with cancer. In a time in their life when their friends and social lives are their world, these teens are facing isolation from others. Many will miss up to a year of school. They have to keep away from large groups for risk of infection. The whole football team can't pile in their room to cheer them up. A laptop can provide them to a link to the outside world.

Natalia, a beautiful 16 year old cancer patient at Texas Children's Hospital in Houston, recognizes the need for a laptop. Through supporters, Natalia got a new laptop to keep up with everything from schoolwork to updating her Care Page (a free service that helps patients keep friends and family abrest of what is going with their treatment). Her father's company has a donation to be made. Recognizing the benefit a laptop has had on her, Natalia has made a big decision. She researched organizations benefiting Texas Children's Hospital and she found Heroes for Children. Specifically, she was interested in Laptops for Love. The donation that is being made is being sent to help HFC purchase a new laptop.

But Natalia didn't stop there. She found someone she believes both deserving and in need of a laptop. She reached out to another patient in the hospital, a new friend that she has bonded with due to their treatments and current situations. Last Friday, I received a phone call from Natalia to discuss her friend and how she can go about getting her a laptop. I have to tell you--I hung up the phone, stared at my computer for a moment, and let the tears flow down my face. Here is a young girl facing the very same cancer my daughter did five years ago. She has taken her situation and made a decision to do something to help someone else. She isn't just letting her current situation get her down. She's making a difference.
I'm so thankful for people like Natalia. I'm thankful that because of her another teen will receive that necessary link to friends, family, and schoolwork. I'm thankful that there are kids like her doing good for others, and I'm thankful for the inspiration she gave me this week.
Natalia--you're my hero!!

HFC Friends Women's Auxiliary Valentine's Dinner

On February 15th, HFC Friends Women's Auxiliary held the 2nd Annual Valentine's Dinner at Northwood Country Club. The Valentine's Dinner is a date night for families that HFC has helped in the past year. It's a special treat for parents to have an initimate dinner for two, while their children are watched by professional nannies from Mom's Best Friend.

Each Mom received a rose at check-in and then once the families were checked in by the nanny service Mom’s Best Friend, they had their portraits taken by Sugar Photography. Then the children and parents parted ways!

-Children to the child care room with crafts, chicken nuggets, french fries, and juice :)

- Parents to the banquet hall with a plated three course meal and fabulous door prizes (all prizes donated by generous HFC Friends members).

Throughout the meal a few students from Hockaday provided the parents with beautiful piano music. And between the courses, we drew names for the great door prizes. Meanwhile, the children were entertained by Zoe the clown, a few high school cheerleaders to teach cheers, and crafts from Mom’s Best Friend.

As each family departed they received a favor bag of items filled to the brim with goodies for the parents and children. All in all it was a fantastic evening for all involved. HFC received much praise from families about how great the evening was and how happy they are to see their children having so much fun!

A special thanks to Northwood Country Club, Sugar Photography, Hockaday piano students, Mom’s Best Friend, Megan Williamson for chairing the event, and all HFC Friends members who donated their time and resources.

Sound bites from the event!

“The night is like Make-A-Wish for grown-ups!”

“From the moment we arrived, we were treated like royalty and greeted with the enthusiasm one would expect as if a soldier was returning from war. The founders of Heroes for Children certainly understand the battle and war we fight on a daily basis as they had their own struggle with their own children suffering from childhood cancer. The memory of their fallen children did not fade into annals of tragic childhood dramas. No, their legacy lives on.”

“The night out with our boys having such a memorable and exciting experience while with us...yet not with us...was truly remarkable and appreciated more than we can ever express to Heroes for Children, Moms Best Friend, Northwood Country Club, Sugar Photography and everyone else who was associated in making our night so wonderful. Thank you.”

See how much fun these children are having!!!

February Volunteer of the Month

It's time for our monthly segment of Volunteer of the Month. I love featuring these volunteers. I always learn something new about the volunteer reading the questionnaire answer they provide. For example, I didn't know that Judie, our February Volunteer, participated in the Taylor's Angels (Heroes for Children's original name) 5K years ago!

We're so lucky that Judie decided to spend more time volunteering with Heroes for Children. She has made a tremendous impact on our office and her volunteer work. Judie is another one of those volunteers that we know we can count on. She's available to help with the Valentine's Dinner we held last night for cancer parents (Christi will blog about that later this week--it was amazing!) to get involved with the mission of the organization. She willingly accepts the position of helping increase membership in Collin County for our women's auxiliary HFC Friends, but she also doesn't shy away from hand addressing 300 invitations for an upcoming cocktail party for Heroes and Handbags! Hopefully, now that she's volunteering with us, we'll have her involved for years to come. We're so grateful for volunteers like Judie!

Each charity can get up to $25,000 in matching gifts, but once the $200,000 is gone, it is gone. We would LOVE to get the maximum donation, so we are encouraging anyone who would regularly make a donation to HFC, to make in on May 20 (early in the morning) so we can double your donation.
If you would like to be reminded to donate on May 20, please email Michelle Peacock with subject: DONORBRIDGE. (NOTE: The website will not be active until May 20. And the match is ONLY available on May 20.)

Ongoing Activities

The Little Gym is "Giving Back"

Superhero Birthday Club
The SBC is a membership club for kids who want to be heroes by helping families with children with cancer. This kids-helping-kids program incorporates giving through children’s birthday parties, and teaches kids the value of giving to others. In lieu of gifts, collect funds for Heroes for Children for your birthday and be a HERO this year! With tools provided by Heroes for Children, you can have a successful event to benefit cancer families in Texas! If your child is having a birthday party and would like to participate in the Superhero Birthday Club, please click here.
We are so excited about ALL of the events and activities we have planned this spring. Hopefully, you are able to take advantage of one or more of the activities listed above, but if not, don't fret, we have one more option for you! :)

Join the "Heart of a Hero" program.
Heroes for Children's Donor Program, Heart of a Hero, allows you, the donor, to assist HFC in serving families with children battling cancer. By making a minimum donation of $500, you could be a Hero to a family waking up to the unwelcome reality of childhood cancer.
For Heart of a Hero levels and benefits, please email Michelle Peacock.

Wishing Everyone a Happy Spring!
